This website is meant to serve as a repository of websites and resources related to the Fall 2018 CIHR Project Scheme Competition.


  1. CIHR has launched the Fall 2018 Project Scheme competition. Please see the updated key dates below.
  2. CIHR is holding a series of upcoming webinars for the Project Scheme. Registration is mandatory for interested participants. Register for an upcoming webinar here.
  3. All application team members (except collaborators) are required to complete CIHR's Equity & Diversity Questionnaire. The questionnaire must be completed BEFORE the Nominated Principal Applicant (PI) can submit the full application to CIHR. The questionnaire does NOT need to be completed at the registration stage. These instructions explain how to complete the questionnaire and there is also an FAQ available online.

Application Review Processes - University Research Services

Full Application Review

The deadline to receive a FULL APPLICATION REVIEW  is August 8, 2018. Note that the administrative review is NOT a scientific review (i.e. a review undertaken by health sciences researchers). Instead, an advisor will provide you with detailed editing feedback to help ensure that your application matches CIHR guidelines, help improve clarity of the written content, etc.

For applicants in the Faculty of Health Sciences, the non-scientific review is MANDATORY if you are submitting a NEW application (i.e., one not previously submitted to CIHR and has not previously received an internal review). Please email Gladys Smith ( or Steve Smith ( a draft copy of your proposal in Word format by August 8, 2018.

  • NB - Administrative reviews of resubmissions are not required; however, the Faculty of Health Sciences will assist in organizing a review of a modified proposal, if requested. The Faculty of Health Sciences also expects that all applications will receive detailed scientific review, either within Queen’s or at other institutions. The Faculty can assist in this process, if required.

For applicants in all other faculties, please email a draft of your proposal to Kristina Arseneau ( by August 8, 2018. Application reviews are OPTIONAL for researchers in other faculties, but are recommended. 


'Mini' Application Review

The deadline to receive a 'MINI' APPLICATION REVIEW from University Research Services is September 5, 2018. The 'mini review' will verify that your application matches CIHR guidelines and that all required components of your application are complete. Please note that detailed editing suggestions will NOT be provided. If you submit your application after September 5, 2018 we cannot guarantee that your application will receive a completeness check prior to submission to CIHR.

If you would like to have a 'mini' review by University Research Services, please: 1) enter all of your application information in ResearchNet, 2) generate a PDF of the full application and, 3) send the PDF document to Kristina Arseneau ( no later than TBD. Applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-serve basis.


Submission Process - University Research Services / CIHR

  • This funding opportunity participates in the eApproval process. This means that when the applicant submits their application using ResearchNet, it will be electronically directed to the University Research Services for review and approval.  Once the applications are reviewed and approved, the administrators at University Research Services will submit the applications electronically to CIHR on behalf of the applicant.
  • PIs must submit a TRAQ DSS for this funding opportunity before applications are forwarded to CIHR by URS. Hospital-based researchers must submit their TRAQ DSS by August 22, 2018. Researchers who are not conducting Hospital-based research must submit their TRAQ DSS by Augsut 30, 2018. All TRAQ DSS files must include a DRAFT copy of the proposal and budget/budget justification. TRAQ DSS files for Hospital-based research must also include the Hospital Departmental Information & Impact Form. For more information, please see the TRAQ resources section below.

  • URS Help Files Bundle - a set of 4 help files: i) suggested structure & common application issues (NEW); ii) application checklist; iii) Biosketch CV checklist; and iv) Co-applicant CV checklist. The help files synthesize key information from CIHR instructions, the peer review manual, and best practices for this competition (PDF, 329 KB, Net ID required).
