Deadline April 24, 2020

The Ministry of Colleges and Universities has announced the availability of Rapid Research Funding through the Ontario Research Fund in support of COVID-19 research. Applicants are invited to submit proposals that:

  • contribute to the global response to the COVID-19 outbreak to mitigate the rapid spread of COVID-19 and its potential negative consequences;
  • provide evidence to inform clinical and public health response (including, but not limited to research in medical, social and policy countermeasures), and/or inform decision-making and planning at the provincial, national and international levels;
  • are highly feasible with immediately achievable and important results; and,
  • are supported by the Vice Principal of Research, CEO or Scientific Director at the applicant’s institution.

Funding is open, on a competitive basis to members of the research community and must be supported by the Vice-Principal (Research). The Fund will pay up to 100% of the requested eligible direct operating costs (including salaries and benefits and limited costs, which include up to 10% for facilities and equipment, and up to 10% for management and administration), as well as a portion of indirect (overhead) costs (up to 40%). The Ministry does not have a maximum funding ask per grant and will consider all funding requests on a case by case basis. There is no matching requirement for this fund. See guidelines for further information.

Application Process

  • Applicants must first submit their proposal through the online Ontario Together Portal before submitting the complete MCU funding application to this Fund.
  • The Ministry will email the funding application form directly to Researchers whose proposals are deemed eligible to move forward to the full application stage.
  • Having obtained approval of the Vice-Principal (Research), Institutional Research Offices must submit the full MCU funding application within seven (7) days of the institution/applicant receiving the MCU application form from the Ministry.
