State-of-the-art Signal Transduction and Molecular Biology Laboratory

decorative image of plants growing in boxesDr. Monaghan’s research focusses on the mechanisms by which plant immune proteins act, how they are regulated and how they influence growth and development. Her current projects focus on understanding the regulation of enzymes by post-translational modifications as well as defining new nodes of immune signal transduction. Much of her research involves molecular techniques such as the generation of transgenic and mutant plants for analysis, site-directed mutagenesis to analyze structure-function relationships, investigation of potential protein binding partners and post-translational modifications using mass spectrometry, and forward-genetic screens assisted by next-generation sequencing. Funding from this grant will allow the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment to set up a modern molecular biology and signal transduction laboratory. Research into elucidating these mechanisms of the plant immune response has the potential to reveal novel strategies in fighting plant diseases.
