When:
Tuesday, May 11, 2021
9:30 AM – 10:30 AM
Where:
Virtual - Microsoft Teams

Description:

Session Description:

In this interactive workshop, you’ll consider how writing will help your students learn, brainstorm discipline-specific genres that go beyond the term paper, and develop strategies for assignment design that highlight writing as an ongoing process rather than a single product, and hone your assignment handouts for maximum clarity with learners.

Institute Description:

The Writing Pedagogy Institute offers you the opportunity to infuse writing into your courses using evidence-based practices for writing pedagogy. Over two weeks of asynchronous activities and synchronous webinars, participants will explore topics related to writing instruction and course design, apply strategies to their own course contexts, and hear from faculty and staff involved with writing pedagogy on Queen’s campus. Robin will be available for individual consultations with participants throughout the two weeks the program is running.

Participants can pick and choose from Institute offerings, but those who attend all four webinars and complete the Feedback Fruits activity will receive a certificate of completion upon request.

Description:

Anti-colonial readings of pandemics in South Asia: A historical perspective

Kasim Tirmizey, FRQSC Post-Doctoral Fellow 2020-2022, Department of Global Development Studies, Queen's University

In early twentieth century, British India was witness to various bouts of pandemics, from the plague to the 1918 flu pandemic. Colonial officials blamed the high mortality rates to the bad hygienic practices of the poor and to natural causes like monsoon failures. Yet, figures like Dadabhai Naoroji and the Ghadar Party understood such events through a very different lens. They articulated a connection between pandemics and colonialism. Establishing such links had political relevance in the struggle against British occupation. What can those anti-colonial perspectives reveal for understanding the contemporary COVID-19 pandemic in South Asia and beyond?
