Can poetry remake a destroyed world in the wake of tragedy? What about poetry and prose together, in the language of that tragedy's victims, in the hands of one of its foremost artists? Yiddish writer Avrom Sutzkever was one of the 20th century's most celebrated and analyzed Jewish poets, but his prose works -- on the boundary of life and death, fiction and memoir -- have not been fully translated until now. In his translation of Sutzkever's Essential Prose, poet-translator Zackary Sholem Berger introduces us to the multicolor, mystical, liminal world of this prophetic lyricist. 

Join us for an evening of spellbinding, mysterious prose poetry, read in Yiddish by Miriam-Khaye Siegel, actor, songwriter, and leading interpreter of Yiddish song, and in translation by Berger, who will also provide a short invitation and introduction into the universe of Sutzkever's prose poetry.
