Queen's University Administrative Internship

The Queen’s University Administrative Internship is a new, first of its kind in Canada, experiential learning opportunity that enables Ph.D. students to be immersed in an administrative on-campus work environment where they can develop new and strengthen existing skills. The program is designed to draw together three foundational pillars for experiential learning.

Work Shadowing

Interns will be introduced to their work environment and an administrative professional’s expectations by work shadowing one or more individuals in the host unit.

Mentorship

A senior administrator in the unit/institute/department who can spend at least 1 hour a week mentoring the intern in an informal setting.

Professional Skills Development

  • Project - Interns will acquire, build and apply skills to complete a discrete deliverable or hands-on project as defined by the host unit.
  • Workshops - Interns will be empowered through experiences and learnings garnered from workshops and seminars.
  • Networking - Interns will be able to tap into a community comprised of a diverse peer cohort and university administrative professionals.

For Interns

  • Learning: Interns learn and apply new skills in different settings and in preparation for any future career. 
  • Unconventional pathways: Interns will be inspired to re-think traditional career pathways post-Ph. D.
  • Leadership - Interns will lead a project that furthers the goal of the host unit or the broader University
  • Compensation: Interns will receive a Grade 7/8 Step 1 compensation while participating in the program

For Host Units & Stakeholders

  • Develop skill sets: Hosts and stakeholders gain a deeper appreciation of the range of skills Queen's PhD students have, and better utilize these talents in the context of their own offices
  • Diversity: Hosts and stakeholders benefit from the diversity of perspectives that interns bring to the project and team environment.
  • Enhanced hiring pools: Hosts and stakeholders will be able to explore alternate pipelines and applicant pools for staff recruitment.
