In response to a growing demand for environmental education, the Faculty of Arts and Science developed a science curriculum for Environmental Biology, Chemistry, Geography (Earth Systems Science), Geological Sciences, and Life Sciences in 1992.

Subsequently, the School of Environmental Studies was created in 1995 to accommodate the rapid growth of the program's popularity.

The expansion of resources and facilities fostered a surge in research activity and funding, bolstered by significant equipment grants and gifts and the facilities now support a number of postdoctoral, graduate, and undergraduate research projects, as well as collaborations with other departments.
