Student Constables

Paid student constables have been part of campus life since 1936, when the Alma Mater Society (AMS) instituted a system of constables to keep order at student events, consistent with the university's long tradition of student self-discipline.

Student Constables work at events and pubs on campus to ensure the safety of patrons and event staff, to enforce the governing regulations of the AMS, and to uphold the regulations stipulated in the Liquor Licence Act of Ontario.

Safety is of the utmost concern to Student Constables. As appropriate, they will check patrons' pieces of identification, frisk for alcohol and weapons, monitor patrons' intoxication levels, and provide appropriate crowd control.

Student Constables also act as a supportive resource available to attendees who may be concerned about themselves, their friends, or the behaviour of other individuals at the event.
