Despite millions of Hong Kongers calling for universal suffrage during the 2014 Umbrella Movement and the 2019 Anti-Extradition Bill Protest, the Hong Kong government has refused to engage in meaningful political reform. Instead, it introduced the National Security Law, which has effectively criminalized any expression of support for the protestors. To better understand how Hong Kongers digitally navigate state censorship by preserving their memories in video games, my research aims first to identify the aesthetic elements that game developers use to visually design a Hong Kong-like society under state oppression and second to explore the effects that these arrangements might have on how Hong Kong activists are remembered. Investigating the role of video games in memory politics can help address how memories might be passed on to those without first-hand experience.
