School of Nursing Academic Series: Cognitive and Emotional Responses of Pregnant Women to Climate Change

School of Nursing Academic Series: Cognitive and Emotional Responses of Pregnant Women to Climate Change

When:
Monday, April 22, 2024
11:30 AM – 12:30 PM
Where:
Description:

Please join us for the presentation entitled 'The Cognitive and Emotional Responses of Pregnant Women to Climate Change and Relationship to Mental Well-being', presented by Gabriella Moraes Rae, BHSc,  Helen Ngozichukwuka Obilor, RN, PhD, Shahirose Sadrudin Premji, RN, BSc, BScN, MScN, PhD, FAAN, FCAN. This event is free, and open to all.

Climate change can elicit a range of reactions in human beings and increase the prevalence of mental health conditions worldwide, with pregnant people being disproportionately affected. However, little is known about how climate change shapes the mental health of pregnant people. More research studies are needed to understand how climate change affects the mental health of pregnant people and unpack its intersectional nature, as emerging evidence has shown its interplay with socioeconomic status, gender, race, and sexuality and its ability to compound existing inequalities. To address this gap, Dr. Shahirose Sadrudin Premji, Gabriella Moraes Rae and Dr. Helen Obilor are working on a research study that will help gain insight into the relationship between pregnant people’s perception of climate change and their emotional responses to climate change and overall mental well-being in Canada. The study findings could enhance healthcare providers’ climate literacy and the development of programs to support pregnant women distraught over the climate crisis.

Cancelled Ingenuity Labs Presents: Aaron Best, The Role of the Trunk in the Stability and Energetics of Locomotion

Cancelled Ingenuity Labs Presents: Aaron Best, The Role of the Trunk in the Stability and Energetics of Locomotion

This event is Cancelled
When:
Thursday, April 18, 2024
1:30 PM – 2:30 PM
Where:
Mitchell Hall
Room:
Find on Campus Map
Description:

This event is cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

Human bipedal walking can be both stable and energetically efficient in complex environments. Previous research has primarily focused on the role of the lower limbs, and little is known about how the trunk contributes towards gait stability and energetic efficiency. I will discuss how I addressed this gap through four novel studies that investigated the role of trunk in human gait. These studies encompass walking at very slow speeds, walking outdoors in winter and summer weather conditions, restricting stability strategies, and the energetic consequences of trunk lean. Each of these studies improve scientific understanding of how the trunk is controlled in order to maintain stability and energetic efficiency during walking, leading to more informed robot algorithms or training regimes for gait assistance and recovery.

Aaron Best is a PhD student at Ingenuity Labs working in the Biomechanics x Robotics Laboratory under Dr. Amy Wu. His research is on the fundamental strategy that humans use to avoid falling while walking. Aaron did his BASc in applied science at Queen's University and has recently defended his PhD thesis.

Join editors Stéfanie von Hlatky, Irina Goldenberg & Joakim Berndtsson for this launch event. An introduction will be given by Peter Kasurak.

*A limited inventory of the book will be on sale for $40.00 (cash only)

about the book:

Total defence, as a concept, combines and extends military and civil defence: in a state of war or emergency, all social institutions mobilize to defend the state. Total defence forces, led by a diverse workforce of defence and security professionals, are critical to both national defence and international security goals.

Total Defence Forces in the Twenty-First Century looks at the various groups that make up this workforce: members of the military’s regular force, reservists, defence civil servants, and contractors working for private military and security companies. When civilian staff and military personnel work towards a common goal, their distinct professional cultures and identities can make integration challenging. Despite the often high levels of partnership, underlying differences affect the quality of the collaboration and, ultimately, organizational and operational effectiveness. Defence ministries around the world are increasingly recognizing the importance of optimizing the ways in which they employ and integrate civilian and military personnel.
