The Culture and Cognition lab (PI: Dr. Li-Jun Ji) in the Department of Psychology at Queen's University, Canada, is currently recruiting for one postdoctoral fellow position. Employment will begin immediately upon being filled, for a one-year contract (with a possibility of renewal). This position offers the chance to partake in ground-breaking research related to human cognition and social behavior, particularly in the area of intelligent technology. Additionally, the post-doctoral fellow will gain valuable experience conducting cross-cultural research, publishing, and collaborating as a member of international interdisciplinary research teams.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for assisting with ongoing research. Current projects are related to understanding the interactions between psychology and technology, AI and psychological well-being, and the influence of culture on cognitive processes.

Key duties

  • Collaborating with the principal investigator and other lab members to develop study materials and enhance study methodology;

  • Overseeing recruitment efforts and employing a variety of methods to attract and retain participants;

  • Analyzing data using a variety of statistical methods, such as MLM, SEM, etc.;

  • Writing manuscripts for journal publication; -Preparing and presenting talks at research conferences and lab meetings;

  • Assisting the principal investigator with grant applications

Requirements

Ideal candidates should have a PhD in psychology or a closely related field. Research experience in an experimental psychology lab and a background in quantitative methods are necessary. The candidate must also have a proven record of strong leadership, organizational and communication skills. The candidate should be self-motivated, proactive, detail oriented, professional, and able to work both independently and collaboratively. Advanced academic writing and statistical skills are required. Understanding/speaking Mandarin Chinese is strongly preferred.

The Culture and Cognition Lab is now recruiting 5-6 volunteer research assistants for the upcoming academic year (2024-2025). This volunteer position will begin in September 2024 and requires a commitment of 8-10 hours per week. In addition to 3-4 open positions, we are seeking students who are fluent or highly proficient in Mandarin Chinese or Spanish. Two spots will be specifically reserved for successful applicants who are English-Chinese (1 spot) or English-Spanish bilinguals (1 spot). The rest of the spots are open to any eligible applicants.

Responsibilities

  • Attending and contributing to weekly lab meetings                                             

  • Recruiting participants for ongoing studies                                              

  • Running participants for ongoing studies (data collection)                                             

  • Supporting ongoing research projects (e.g., translating study materials, coding qualitative data, entering data, reviewing study materials, editing written materials, etc.)

Requirements

Applicants should be currently in their first or second year of study and must have some psychology background or experience.
Ideal candidates should also have the following qualifications:

  • Being responsible and reliable
  • Dedicated and self-motivated
  • Conscientiousness and attention to detail
  • Good time management and leadership skills
  • Good communication skills; excellent writing skills
  • Intellectual interest in the lab’s research areas
  • Additional language proficiency (e.g., Chinese or Spanish) is a bonus, although it’s not required

Previous research experience is not required.
