University, College or Other Student: Apply to a Different Faculty

General Requirements

All Applicants

Your academic record will continue to be relevant in your new plan. In particular, the cumulative GPA will be calculated on all courses attempted during the your undergraduate career at Queen's, and will be used when assessing academic progression, prerequisites, and any other purpose specified under the Academic Regulations.

First-Year Applicants are defined as students who have attempted fewer than 24.0 units; failures are considered attempted units.

Upper-Year Applicants are defined as students who have attempted 24.0 or more units; failures are considered attempted units.

Please refer to our Transfer Credits page for an explanation of the transfer credit assessment process.

Internal Transfer to the Faculty of Arts and Science

Applicants wishing to transfer to the Faculty of Arts and Science:

  1. Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 1.60
  2. Must satisfy appropriate departmental criteria that may exceed these minimums
  3. Those interested in a Bachelor of Science program must also have taken the secondary school (or equivalent) prerequisite courses

Upper-Year Applicants indicate their intended degree program and plan. Due to space limitations, not all plans are open to students transferring into the Faculty of Arts and Science. After being admitted to an open plan, upper-year transfer students will not be able to transfer into a plan that was closed when they were admitted to Queen’s, or that closes subsequently. This is the case even for those who take a qualifying course once at Queen’s and receive a competitive average.

Should student have attempted 132.0 units or more and have a cumulative GPA of less than 1.90 at the point of admission, or subsequently complete 132.0 units and have a GPA of less than 1.90, then student will be deemed ineligible to proceed to an Honours degree and will be restricted to a General degree only. This decision is not appealable. More information is available on Academic Regulation 13.8.1.

Students with a cumulative GPA of less than 1.60 should speak with an Academic Advisor in the Faculty of Arts and Science to inquire about available options.

Your academic record will continue to be relevant in your new plan. In particular, the cumulative GPA will be calculated on all courses attempted during the student's undergraduate career at Queen's, and will be used when assessing academic progression and prerequisites, and any other purpose specified under the Academic Regulations. Courses that were not passed in your previous program will count as failures in the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Once admitted on SOLUS, students should drop any of the previous program courses that they no longer wish to take.

The Smith School of Business

Application Deadline: June 1st

Applications must be submitted through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) using a 105D Application.

Students in other faculties or schools at Queen's University may be considered as upper-year applicants to the Smith School of Business. There are very few spaces available; consequently, students need to have a minimum GPA of 3.3 (high B standing) on 24.0 or more units to be competitive for admission consideration.

Prerequisite Information:

  • Calculus at either the senior high school or university level is a prerequisite. There are no other specific university course prerequisites.
  • When selecting upper-year students, Smith School of Business seeks candidates who are well prepared academically and who, through their variety of interests, experience, and capabilities, can contribute to and benefit from a stimulating intellectual climate and can function effectively in business organizations after graduation. In short, the School seeks the same qualities in its students as business seeks in our graduates: bright, well-rounded individuals.
  • As part of the application, a Supplementary Essay (SE) is required and is intended to give the selection committee a broader picture of accomplishments than is possible by marks alone. This will appear as an item on the To Do list in your Student Center (accessible through SOLUS). You will find a link to the SE system on your Student Center page. The deadline for receipt of all supporting documentation is June 15.
  • Candidates for admission with advanced standing will be considered as a group in mid-July and offers of admission are sent as soon as possible after that date.

Due to the late date when decisions are made and the limited number of available spaces, applicants are advised to participate in the preregistration process of their current program.

Internal Transfer to Smith Engineering

Students can apply as either a first-year student or as an upper-year transfer.

The number of transferrable courses to first-year Engineering determines if transfer students should apply for first-year or upper-year admission.  Students who will have completed fewer than the equivalent of at least 6 first-year Engineering courses, should apply for first-year Engineering. Those with at least 6 first-year equivalent to Engineering courses should apply for upper-year Engineering.

Please review the list of first-year Engineering courses.

Deadline for First-year Applicants: February 1
Deadline for Upper-year Applicants: June 1

Apply through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre using a 105D Application.

To be eligible for admission consideration to the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, students in other faculties or schools at Queen's University must have taken Ontario 4U Chemistry, 4U Physics and 4U Calculus (or their equivalents).

Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.7 and no failures in relevant courses on their university transcript. Some Engineering programs, such as Mechanical and Chemical, are more competitive, because of limited space for upper-year transfer students.

Internal Transfer to the School of Nursing

Students in other faculties or schools at Queen's University are normally considered as first-year applicants to the School of Nursing.

To be eligible, all applicants must have a minimum cumulative 2.7 (B-) Grade Point Average using all university courses taken. They must also have taken Ontario 4U English Literature (with a minimum final grade of 75%), 4U Biology, 4U Chemistry, and one 4U Mathematics, or their equivalents. University-level equivalents are accepted and a university-level Statistics course is accepted in place of the required high school Mathematics.

Although academic performance is the most important factor in making admission decisions, it is not the only one. Queen's School of Nursing is seeking students who show a strong motivation to pursue the profession of nursing, an ability to relate to others, as well as initiative and perseverance in academic studies. All applicants are required to submit a Supplementary Application. This will appear as an item on the To Do List in SOLUS.

Current Queen's students are not required to request for high school or university transcripts to be sent in for admission consideration.

The selection committee will review complete application files in the spring. Applicants will then be notified of their decision.

Supplementary Information

Your high school transcript is just one piece of information we use when making an admission decision. Each applicant to Queen’s has a unique To-Do List, detailing exactly what we need to complete your application. You can see your To-Do List (and the due dates) on your SOLUS Student Centre. We will send your SOLUS access information after you apply.

We review and update our supplementary requirements on a regular basis to ensure applicants have a meaningful platform to share additional information not available through their grades.

English Language Proficiency (ELP) Requirements: Do you live in a country where English is not the acknowledged primary language? Find out if you are required to submit ELP scores…

QBridge is an English language pathway to Queen’s University for students who are academically competitive for admission to a Queen’s undergraduate degree program, but who do not meet the required admission standard for English language proficiency. The QBridge programs ensure that students are linguistically, academically, and culturally prepared to complete their Queen’s undergraduate degree studies.
