The Queen’s Alumni Review has earned gold at the National Magazine B2B Awards with its summer 2025 edition named Best Issue at a June ceremony in Toronto.
The magazine also picked up accolades for writing and design in what is considered the premier awards program for trade and professional magazines in Canada. Heading into the competition, the Review led all finalists with 11 nominations across categories.
Writer Tony Atherton also won gold in the Best Profile of a Person category with his feature in the summer 2025 issue about the life of Lois Hazlett, a devoted Gaels football fan who, at 96, was celebrating her 69th year as a season-ticket holder. This is Mr. Atherton’s second gold honour for the Alumni Review – he previously won for If These Walls Could Talk, an ongoing series that won the Best Editorial, Column, or Regularly Featured Department category three years ago and continues in the magazine today.
The summer 2025 issue also received the silver award in the Best Art Direction of a Complete Issue category.
“An unconventional cover is just the surprising start,” the jury noted. “The strength of this issue lies in the breadth and quality of its photographic assignments, with great visual pacing, a judicious use of pullquotes, and a nice balance of white space to showcase stories that resonate with its readership.”
The Alumni Review also received honourable mentions for Best Feature Article (Robert Gerlsbeck), Best Art Direction of a Single Article or Opening Spread (four nominations, all by in-house graphic designer Wendy Treverton), Best Art Direction of a Complete Issue (pitting the magazine against itself with the Spring 2025 issue), and the prestigious Best Magazine category.
