Dr. Stephen W. Thomas is an adjunct professor at the Smith School of Business at Queen’s University in Kingston, ON, Canada. He is also the Director of the Smith Master of Management Analytics program, and the inaugural Director of the Smith Master of Management in Artificial Intelligence program.
Steve holds PhD, MSc, and BSc degrees in Computer Science. His main research interests are analytics, machine learning, and natural language processing. His research has been published in leading journals including IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, Empirical Software Engineering, and others. He is a recipient of the Scotiabank Scholar research grant.
At Smith, Steve teaches courses on natural language processing, machine learning, database design, big data, and mathematical analysis in Smith’s Commerce, MMA, MMAI, MBA, and Executive Education programs. He was named the Professor of the Year in the MMA program in 2017, 2018, and 2019. He serves on the MMA advisory board.
Steve previously ran a tech startup in the world of big data, and before that, held an industrial operations research position at Raytheon. He has consulted widely on the topics of big data, text analytics, and machine learning.
Steve lives in Kingston with his wife, three children, and dog.
