Description:

Abstract: The emergence COVID-19 across the world highlighted the need for countries to have sufficient medical supplies and equipment to potentially treat large numbers of patients.  Medical ventilators were identified as a one of the key items needed to treat the most severely affected patients.  This need motivated an international group of physicists and engineers to undertake developing the Mechanical Ventilator Milano (MVM).  The development group also included key industrial partners to enable large scale manufacturing. This talk will present details of the design and discuss the development process of the MVM.

Bio: Mitch King is the lead engineer in the Mechanical Equipment Development Branch at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories in Chalk River, Ontario.  Mitch received his M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering in 1990 from the University of Saskatchewan.  His experience includes leading the development of reactor inspection, maintenance and repair tooling, and remote systems for nuclear facility maintenance, refurbishment and decommissioning.   Recently, Mitch was part of an international collaboration that designed and developed a medical ventilator in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
