GeoEngineering Seminar Series: Dr Kerry Rowe (Queen’s) “Geosynthetics for construction on soft foundation soils”
4:30 PM – 5:30 PM
The 2019-2020 Mercer Lecture: “Geosynthetics for construction on soft foundation soils”
By Dr. R. Kerry Rowe, OC, FRS, NAE, FREng, FRSC, P.Eng., Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada
Abstract: This lecture examines the progress made in the last few decades with respect to the use of geosynthetics for aiding in the construction on soft soils. Consideration is given to basal reinforcement, prefabricated vertical drains, and embankments with reinforcement and other supports such as piles. Consideration is also given to different soft soils ranging from peat to rate sensitive soft clay and silt.
Bio: Over the past 45 years, Rowe has gained extensive research and consulting experience in geotechnical, geosynthetics, soil reinforcement and geoenvironmental engineering. His work has won over 100 awards, and he has been appointed to the world most prestigious scientific and engineering societies. He has given numerous distinguished lectures including the IGS Giroud, BGA Rankine, ISSMGE Casagrande, and the ASCE Karl Terzaghi Lectures. In 2013, the ISSMGE created the R. Kerry Rowe Lecture.
