Description:

Join us for an educational luncheon featuring a special talk by Dr. Jean Hutchison entitled Under Vimy Ridge: An Exploration of WWI Excavation Stability.

Vimy Ridge, in northern France, is the site of one of WWI's pivotal battles. It is now home to the publicly accessible Vimy memorial site, consisting of the memorial itself, an Interpretive Centre, restored Allied and German trenches, a section of rehabilitated tunnel, and two cemeteries. Occasionally, the ground surface falls into some of the many kilometers of hidden and lost tunnels and excavations which remain from the war. Between 2001 and 2010, Dr. Jean Hutchinson worked on a series of projects to understand this problem in order to protect public safety at the site. Dr. Hutchinson was privileged to join the Queen’s Alumni Association tour to this and other battle sites on the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge last year. Learn about rock engineering, the use of geological knowledge in First World War military strategy, and Canadian history directly from the Queen's expert who is ensuring that the Vimy Ridge Memorial Site is preserved for future generations.

Menu: Roasted Butternut Squash Soup with Asiago Croutons, Slow Roasted Sirloin with Dauphinoise Potato & Candied Carrot Batons, Chocolate Lava Cake, Coffee or Tea.
