The departments of Global Development Studies and Languages, Literatures, and Cultures present:

Dr. John Akweniiostha Hodson:

"Re-conceptualizing Indigenous School Improvement: Epistemology, Language & Global Indigenous Development. A Case Study"

After a decade of effort by the Ontario Ministry of Education, Indigenous high schoolers continue to leave school before completing grade 12 in unprecedented numbers.
Re-conceptualizing Indigenous School Improvement: Epistemology, Language & Global Indigenous Development is a pilot project that supports teachers to shift their practice in favour of the learning needs of Indigenous learners enrolled in a high school in Thunder Bay Ontario.
Unlike past efforts that focus on teacher’s knowledge of “cultures, histories & perspectives”, this pilot literally teaches teachers an Indigenous epistemology and a new language of teaching that reflects the learning needs of Indigenous children through a process that is voluntary, respectful and confidential.
The Maamaawisiiwin Professional Teacher Development Program (MPTDP) is rooted in the very successful Te Kotahitanga program developed by Maori in New Zealand/Aotearoa.
This presentation provides an overview of the MPTDP that has application in schools across the province.
