The Norman contribution to the Iberian wars
Dr. Lucas Villegas-Aristizabal, Professor of History, BISC
This talk addresses the Norman contribution to the Iberian wars in the North-Eastern side of that region from the siege of Barbastro (1064) to the donation of Tarragona (1129) to Robert Burdet. These two points represent some of the most well-known events of Norman incursion into the peninsula and also show distinct features of their involvement. It attempts to answer why the Normans were attracted to this particular frontier. It also explores how their local Norman circumstances as well as the sacralisation of the Iberian wars transformed their emphasis from sacking to settlement before and after the First Crusade (1095-1099).
