The Global Compacts: Multilateral responses to migration and refugee challenges and opportunities

Glen Linder,  Director General, International and Intergovernmental Relations, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada

He will give an overview of the recently-adopted Global Compact for Migration and Global Compact on Refugees, reflect on the process of achieving consensus on these instruments, and discuss next steps.

As Director General, Glen Linder is responsible for leading Canada’s international and domestic relationships, including those with provinces and territories, in the area of migration, refugees and citizenship.

Glen joined the federal public service as a Foreign Service officer in Citizenship and Immigration Canada in 1998 and was posted to the Canadian Embassy in Guatemala from 2000 to 2002.

On his return, he moved to the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, where he worked in the Oceans and Environmental Law Division of Legal Bureau for four years, then moved  to the Department of Justice, where he was legal counsel in the Public International Law Section. He joined the Department of Public Safety as Director of the International Affairs Division in 2008.

From 2014 to 2016, he was Senior Director of Occupational Health and Safety in the Labour Program of Employment and Social Development Canada, responsible for advancing health and safety legislation, regulations, and compliance in federal jurisdiction workplaces.
