Research Lecture Title: The Residential Schools Land Memory Mapping Project in a Transitional Justice Context
Abstract:
Whereas yesterday’s cartography was interpreted narrowly and used as a colonial tool in attempts to dominate land and people, today’s critical, collaborative
approaches to mapping have broadened the field and involve unique approaches to storytelling and sharing that enhance reconciliation, including respect for the land and people. The Residential Schools Land Memory Mapping Project (funded by SSHRC) takes a reflexive and emergent approach to collaboratively exploring the many dimensions of the Residential Schools legacy, including reconciliation initiatives. David Crocker’s holistic view of reconciliation in a transitional justice framework is useful for interpreting the RSLMMP. This presentation provides a reflexive high-speed tour of the project’s innovative approach to mapping collaboratively with research assistants, students, Indigenous community members, academics, organizations and others, and demonstrates how both process and product build awareness and relationships.
