IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Talk

Abstract

In this interactive session, we will examine some of the reasons for the gender imbalance in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fields. We will look at some of the efforts to increase the number of women in these fields and brainstorm ideas of what has been done and what more we can do at Queen’s to make a difference.

Biography

Wendy Powley is an Assistant Professor in the School of Computing at Queen’s University. Her research has focused on Autonomic Computing, that is, designing systems that are self-aware and reconfigure to adjust to changing conditions. She now teaches full time with a passion for inspiring those who are discovering computing for the first time. She is founder of the Canadian Celebration of Women in Computing conference, an annual conference that brings together around 700 (mainly female) students and professionals from across the country to celebrate, network and learn. She is also the founder of the Queen’s Women in Computing group (QWIC) and holds an executive position on the ACM-W council.
