The Politics and Poetics of Animated Collage, with Emily Pelstring
Building on ideas developed through her past curatorial and film projects, artist Emily Pelstring will teach a workshop on 2D, mixed-media, stop-motion animation. This workshop takes inspiration from the long tradition of artists who have remediated and re-contextualized found images from popular culture and news media, and used collage as a tool for political critique. Participants will create short (10-30 second) animations using the format of the PSA that address topics of personal and political concern, with an orientation toward human rights and ecological responsibility. We will use the iStopmotion app, borrowed iPads, and a cardboard animation rig that is easy to build at home. Materials will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring small objects and print media that they would like to work with. This workshop is in partnership with The Kingston Frontenac Public Library.
