Untold Stories on Kingston Penitentiary Tours: An Online Panel Discussion

When:

12:00 PM – 1:00 PM
Where:

Description:

The voices of criminalized people continue to be excluded during tours of Kingston Penitentiary (KP), along with narratives critical of and advancing alternatives to imprisonment. In response, this event will feature the official release of "The Untold Stories on Kingston Penitentiary Tours Series" by the Carceral Cultures Research Initiative featuring testimonials produced by people once imprisoned in federal penitentiaries located in the Kingston-area, including KP and P4W.

These interventions will illuminate the violence of incarceration, the shortcomings of reforming instead of abolishing prisons, and the need to build caring communities, not cages. In addition, event speakers will discuss the emergence and implications of KP tours as a Correctional Service of Canada public relations exercise and local charitable endeavour that reproduces stigma and naturalizes the notion that caging human beings is an appropriate response to social harm. They will also propose different possibilities for decolonial and decarceral futures for the KP lands and buildings presently owned by the Government of Canada.
