Description:

Join Queen’s professors Dr. Glenda Fisk and Dr. Jacoba Lilius for an interactive session that explores the many forms of grief and how to foster a grief-literate work culture. A practical and compassionate approach to building grief literacy. While loss and grief are inevitable elements of the human experience, many of us feel ill-equipped to support others who are grieving such losses. Thus, our aim is to build both literacy around the nature of grief and efficacy to respond in meaningful ways. Fostering a grief-literate workplace not only supports individual healing but also strengthens a sense of community and organizational health. In this session, participants will explore the varieties of grief experiences, as well as discuss how to build a grief literate workplace that both acknowledges and better understands the inevitable experience of grief.

  • Types of grief (e.g., 'normal' grief, anticipatory grief, traumatic grief, etc);
  • Creating a grief-literate work culture that acknowledges and respects grief including:
    • Communication strategies for managers and peers to offer empathy and support;
    • Policies and practices that promote flexibility and psychological well-being;
    • Advocacy and resilience-building techniques for grieving individuals.

Mix of presentation and interactive discussions. (The workshop content will run for 60 minutes, with up to 30 minutes reserved for extended Q&A and discussion).
