Safety is fundamental to all research conducted at the Reactor Materials Testing Laboratory (RMTL). The facility operates under comprehensive radiation safety protocols and follows all applicable university and regulatory requirements to ensure a safe environment for researchers, staff, students, and visitors.
Radiation safety training
Anyone working in or accessing the RMTL must complete the appropriate radiation safety training before entering designated laboratory spaces. Training is delivered through a tiered qualification system, with access to specific areas and equipment based on an individual's training level and authorized activities.
ALARA principles
The RMTL follows the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle, an internationally recognized approach to radiation protection. Through careful facility design, operational procedures, monitoring, and training, radiation exposure is kept as low as reasonably achievable for both personnel and the public.
Laboratory requirements
All personnel working in the laboratory are expected to follow established safety procedures and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). At a minimum, long pants and closed-toe shoes are required when working in laboratory spaces. Additional PPE may be required depending on the work being performed.
