Lake Trout Lake

An NSERC strategic project that brings together paleolimnologists and modellers to model, hindcast and forecast deepwater dissolved oxygen concentrations in Ontario lake trout lakes. Lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) are a rare and valuable resource requiring effective stewardship.

Within Ontario, many lake trout live within narrow temperature and oxygen boundaries near the southern limit of their range. Concerns are growing that lake trout habitat is increasingly threatened as multiple environmental stressors contribute to oxygen depletion.

This research effort is a collaboration between researchers at Queen's and York universities, scientists from Environment Canada and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change, as well as the Lake of Woods Water Sustainability Foundation and the Federation of Ontario Cottagers' Associations to provide state of the art tools to better manage lake trout habitat, provide guidance on mitigation strategies and ensure sustainable management.
