Scholarship and Research Essentials

Getting Started

If you are new to educational scholarship, this section can help you take your first steps. We outline the core stages of the scholarly process—from identifying a question to sharing your findings—and offer guidance tailored to the Queen’s context.

Guides, Modules, and Toolkits

These concise, practical resources support each stage of the scholarly process. Find tools for designing research questions, conducting literature reviews, selecting methods, collecting data, and engaging in analysis and interpretation.

Journals, Databases, and Reading Lists

Access curated lists of journals, scholarly databases, and reading resources relevant to educational scholarship and research. We highlight Queen’s strengths, including health professions education, Indigenous scholarship, and curriculum design.

Explore foundational frameworks in educational scholarship, including SoTL principles, mixed-methods approaches, qualitative and quantitative methodologies, and models that guide research and evaluation. We also highlight frameworks integral to Queen’s, including Universal Design for Learning, Indigenization, and interprofessional collaboration.

Ethics in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Guide

(Taylor Institute)

This Taylor Institute Guide takes the researcher through the essentials of the Canadian standards for ethical practice in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). Because of the unique challenges of SoTL, where the human participants that are the subject of the research are also typically the researcher’s students, this guide translates the comprehensive TCPS2 (2014) for the researcher conducting SoTL research.
