Dr. Sonal Varma, MD, MSc, FRCPC, FCAP, founded and directs the PathomicsV-Lab at Queen’s University, establishing a multidisciplinary research hub dedicated to bridging subspecialty tissue pathology with computational machine learning. Under her leadership, the lab brings together computer scientists, biomedical engineers, pathology fellows, and medical trainees to build trusted, clinical-grade artificial intelligence models for whole-slide image analysis.
As Principal Investigator, Dr. Varma shapes the lab's core strategy: turning complex, high-dimensional digital pathology data into transparent, interpretable diagnostic tools. Her lab's research programs focus on automating risk prediction, identifying spatial tissue biomarkers, and developing real-time decision-support systems for breast oncology and gastrointestinal disease.
Beyond directing lab operations and supervising computational research teams, Dr. Varma leads hospital-wide digital pathology deployment at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) and serves as Secretary of the Clinical Teachers Association of Queen's University (CTAQ). Her dual expertise as an active subspecialty pathologist and lab director ensures that PathomicsV-Lab innovations are built for direct translation into patient care.
