Looking for women and men working or having worked with women in the Canadian Army’s combat units (armoured, artillery, infantry or combat engineering). Open to servicemembers from the regular force and the reserve, working in a combat occupation or posted in a combat unit (as a medic, as a logistician, etc.), as well as veterans meeting these criteria.

My name is Johanna Masse, and I am a researcher from the Centre for International and Defence Policy (CIDP) at Queen’s University. You may already have heard of the study I am doing and that is called

“Navigating gendered representations inside and outside the job: an analysis of military women’s experiences within Canadian Armed Forces’ combat units.”

The objective of this research is to study the gendered representations of women in the Canadian Armed Forces’ combat units (armoured, artillery, infantry, engineer) that women are confronted with in their everyday life. This research will be conducted through interviews. The aim is to learn more about women’s experiences and get a better understanding of military culture as well as how to improve gender relations.

In the first part of this study, I interviewed women from the regular force and in combat units about their own experiences. In this follow-up, I would like to interview servicemembers about their experiences as women but also as men having worked with women in combat occupations. Also, it is open to servicemembers not in a combat occupation but posted in a combat unit. It is also open to servicemembers from the regular force as well as the reserve, and veterans meeting these criteria.

Each interview could take between 60 and 90 minutes. It can sometimes take more time, but it can be divided in different sessions depending on your availability. You would be free to choose when andwhere it is best for you!

I am available to answer any questions you have about the study. You may contact me at johanna.masse@queensu.ca or my supervisor, Stefanie von Hlatky at svh@queensu.ca.

If you would like to participate, please contact me so that we can arrange a meeting – in person or virtual depending on what is possible – so that we can talk a bit more about what participating in the study entails.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Dr. Johanna Masse
