The Department of Global Development Studies is proud to celebrate the recognition of DEVS 356: The Political Economy of Resource Extraction as a featured example in the Centre for Teaching and Learning’s Global Engagement Toolkit, a resource that showcases courses across Queen’s University that meaningfully integrate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into curriculum design and student learning.
Taught by Idorenyin Williams in Winter 2026, DEVS 356 was highlighted for its approach to “Turning Concepts into Critique Through Scaffolded Learning.” Through SDG-informed learning outcomes and assignments, the course encouraged students to critically examine how resource extraction shapes issues of environmental sustainability, social equity, economic development, and governance. In doing so, students engaged with sustainability challenges reflected across several SDGs, including responsible production and consumption, reduced inequalities, and peace, justice, and strong institutions.
