We are so pleased to announce our upcoming event with Dr. Ashon Crawley “Made Instrument, an Introduction”. Please join the School of Religion as we host Dr. Crawley virtually on February 25th at 2:00pm. To register for this event see below.
In this talk, I describe my book-in-progress, Made Instrument, about the sound of the Hammond organ and its relation to black spirituality, black sexuality, black queer possibility. What can attending to a specific instrument tell us about histories of refusal, histories of confrontation, histories of desire? Imagined as the sound of the black church, and the sound of the black church imagined as the affective desire of transformative potentiality of black social life and relation in general, the Hammond organ gives a shadow history of black life on the move, in motion."
