Modular Degree Plans in French Studies

Minor

24 units. 

This Plan, in combination with a Major or Specialization Plan in another subject, and with sufficient electives, will lead to an Honours Bachelors Degree.

Major

48 units. 

This Plan, when combined with a Major or Minor in another subject, and with sufficient electives to total 120.00 units, will lead to a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Degree.

Specialization

60 units.

This Plan, alone, or in combination with a Minor in another subject, and with sufficient electives to total 120.00 units, will lead to a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Degree.

NOTE: The Specialization will be available in 2027-2028. Students can apply in their 3rd year of study (1st round in spring 2027), providing they have a GPA of 3.5. Application required.

GENERAL Degree Plan

The course requirements for the Minor plan, along with sufficient electives to total 90.00 units, will lead to a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. See French Studies – General (Arts)

French Studies Course Pathway & Requirements

UPDATE: FREN 152/3.0 is the new gateway course for all French degree plans.
(FREN 150/6.0 used to be the starting point for French Studies.)

  • To take FREN 152, you must first complete FREN 151/3.0.
  • If your proficiency in French is too advanced for either course, please consult the Special Circumstances section below.

Admission to a French Plan

You’ll be automatically accepted into a French Plan if you meet both of these requirements:

  • A minimum grade of C in FREN 152, and
  • A cumulative GPA of 1.9 or higher.

If you don’t meet these, you’ll be placed on a pending list for departmental review during the Plan Selection or Change Period.

Course Pathways

These maps can help to provide a suggested pathway through the necessary courses of your program, but that pathway does not have to be followed exactly. The requirements listed at the bottom of each map all need to be met in order to complete the program in question, but the order of some courses can be shifted. We do recommend taking FREN 230 and FREN 231 as early in your program as possible, since they are the prerequisites for all upper-level courses.

Plan Selection & Change of Plan

  • First-year students must choose a modular degree as part of the new degree framework.
  • Upper-year students may choose to switch to a modular degree plan.

Special Circumstances

  • Not quite ready for FREN 151?
    Based on your placement test, you may be placed in FREN 118/3.0. While it doesn’t count toward your degree, completing it allows you to take FREN 151 next.
  • Too advanced for FREN 151? 
    You’ll be placed directly into FREN 152. After completing that, you are eligible to take FREN 230 or FREN 231.
  • Too advanced for FREN 152? 
    You’ll take FREN 230 or FREN 231 instead. Contact French Studies for guidance: francais@queensu.ca.
  • Francophone or native French speakers are not permitted to take FREN 219 or FREN 320.

NOTE: If you bypass any 100-level French course, you must complete the equivalent number of units of FREN courses at the 300-level or above to substitute for the missing credits and fulfill your degree requirements.
