The Student Experience Office hosted the July 2020 Summer Orientation to Academics and Resources (SOAR), a month-long summer orientation program for incoming first year students and their families. SOAR included content designed specifically for parents and supporters to help them support their student’s transition to university. BISC Supporting Your Student

Learearn from Student Services Staff at Bader International Study Centre about key skills your student should develop in order to make the most of an online fall semester, important discussions to have with your student to help set them up for success in their first year and how the BISC will be supporting student development over the fall term.

BISC Course Selection Advising

China Time Zone Students: Tuesday July 21, 4:00 am – 6:00 am EST

Every BISC student will have the chance to talk for 15 minutes with an experienced BISC Advisor about their course choices and the program more generally. These advising sessions will be by Zoom , your student will receive an email to their Queen’s email account confirming the date and time of their 15 minute session with an academic advisor. Please ensure your student responds promptly to the email to confirm that they can make the time and date allocated to them.

Hear from students and student affairs staff at Queen’s about critical conversations you should be having with your student. Join Corinna Fitzgerald, Assistant Dean Student Life and Learning to learn about supporting your first year student as they transition to university. This webinar will focus on critical conversations you should be having with your student to help them prepare for university, and feature a student panel – including students who lived at home during their first year of university.

QSAS Webinar

Queen’s Student Accessibility Services (QSAS) is part of Student Wellness Services (SWS) which also includes Student Health, Student Counselling, and Health Promotion. Learn about the services that QSAS provides services for all Queen’s students with disabilities including: academic accommodations, transition supports, adaptive technology, advocacy and referrals.This webinar will also provide you with information about how to register with QSAS, and answer questions about accommodations and online learning.

Details

These sessions are designed for incoming first year students in Arts and Science.  They will walk students through the A&S 101 Handbook, how to build a timetable, and how to add classes in SOLUS (including how to find enrollment appointment and the idea of first year being a time for exploration and keeping Plan options open). AP and IB credits will be covered. They will also provide some information on the academic cycle – what happens in first year and when (December exams, mid-year grades, final grades, Plan selection, other important dates), next steps, future years and where to go for information and advice as a first year student.

Each session will contain tailored, program-specific information.

Meet Susan Korba, the director of the Student Academic Success Services (SASS). In this introductory video, Susan explores some of the many services available to students who come to SASS.
