Being prepared for emergencies is an important component of living off-campus. Having a plan will help you navigate unexpected situations confidently and effectively.

Emergency contacts:

If it is an emergency, call 911. For situations that don’t require 911, you can call the Kingston Police Services non-emergency line #613-549-4660. It is also important you have all of your housemate’s emergency contact information easily accessible. My housemate’s and I have it posted on our fridge!

SeQure App:

By downloading this app, you have access to campus security resources, including the campus security emergency line

Emergency plan:

Creating an emergency plan with your house will help you and your housemates know what to do in the case of an emergency. In this plan, include how you would meet or contact one another if not together during the emergency.

Emergency kit:

The Canadian Red Cross recommends each household has a disaster preparedness kit with enough supplies to meet your housemate’s needs for three days. Click here to access a list of essential items for your emergency kit.

Promptly address maintenance issues:

By reporting any maintenance issues to your landlord immediately, repair can prevent minor problems from becoming emergencies.

Practice personal safety:

Lock your doors and windows, share your location with those you trust. My housemates and I find having each other’s locations extremely helpful if this is something you and your friends are comfortable with.

Manage stress during emergencies:

If you find yourself in an emergency, it is important to stay calm and rely on the emergency plan you have made to guide your actions.

Evaluate and learn:

After an emergency, consider what went well and what could possibly be improved if you ever find yourself in a similar situation.

By taking these proactive steps, you can handle emergencies and unexpected situations with confidence while living off-campus.
