"States and Nations: Diversity, Domination, and Legitimacy"

The International Summer Research Institute is led by Alain-G. Gagnon (director), holder of the Canada Research Chair in Quebec and Canadian Studies (UQAM) and John McGarry, holder of the Canada Research Chair in Nationalism and Democracy (Queen’s University). It is supported by the Centre de recherche interdisciplinaire sur la diversité et la démocratie (CRIDAQ); the Research Group on Plurinational Societies (GRSP); the Centre for the Study of Democracy and Diversity (Queen’s University); the Faculty of Law of the University of Glasgow; the Centre d’études internationales (CERI, Sciences Po Paris); the Centre on Constitutional Change (University of Edinburgh), the University Pompeu Fabra (Barcelone) as well as the Institute for Minority Rights and the Institute for Studies on Federalism and Regionalism, both part of the European Academy (Bolzano-Bozen).

Invited scholars from all around Europe, Quebec and Canada will speak to a similarly diverse group of approximately twenty-five graduate students. The confirmed speakers include Elisabeth Albert, Eva Maria Belser, Evelyne Brie, Andrea Carlà, Sergiu Constantin, Alain Dieckhoff, Catrin Wyn Edwards, Alain-G. Gagnon, Oded Haklai, John Hall, Christophe Jaffrelot, Michael Keating, Allison McCulloch, John McGarry, Nicola McEwen, Margaret Moore, Geneviève Nootens, Francesco Palermo, Mireille Paquet, Marc Sanjaume, Alex Schwartz, Arjun Tremblay, Verena Wisthaler and Jens Woelk.

Democratic Practices – Human Rights – Territorial Claims – Citizenship – Legal Order – Authoritarianism – Domination – Populism – Internal Nations – First Peoples – Political Hegemony – Ethnocracy – Political Control – Resistance – Nationalizing States – Territorial Disputes – Minority Protection – Population Resettlements – Immigration – Constituent Powers – Demos

 

In addition to daily seminars, there will be field trips to the Ladin Valley and to the regional parliament. Students will be expected to make a short presentation about their research project during the last days of the Summer Institute.

Registration fees apply. Supporting funding for students can be allocated by the organizers. Students will be hosted at a local hotel. Accommodation fees will be covered by the organizers.
