The addition of a few words could make a world of difference when it comes to safety and security on campus. That’s why Campus Security will be changing its name to Campus Security and Emergency Services. The new name better reflects the wide range of services that the unit provides, including after-hours support for students in distress.

“Our staff are well trained to deal with emergencies of all kinds, including those related to health and safety,” says David Patterson, Director of Campus Security and Emergency Services. “We want the community to be clear that we are the first responders on campus and are equipped to handle a wide range of emergency situations.”

The name change was recommended in the report issued by the Principal’s Commission on Mental Health (PCMH). The commission acknowledged that while security staff receive the comprehensive training required to respond to mental health-related crises, the current name does not fully reflect that breadth of that experience.

The transition to the new name will begin immediately and will involve rebranding everything from security vehicles to the SeQure student safety app. The process should be completed by the time the majority of students return to campus in September 2013.
