Kingston City Council has passed an amended temporary exemption to the city noise control bylaw for two West Campus fields and Richardson Stadium. The amendments to the staff recommendation allow for a pilot test of the proposed exemption through June 2015.

“We’re appreciative of council’s decision to grant Queen’s a temporary noise exemption for these fields,” says Caroline Davis, Vice-Principal (Finance and Administration) and acting principal. “We acknowledge the amendments to the staff recommendation and believe this exemption is respectful of the immediate neighbours, while allowing Queen’s student and community groups to continue to use the fields at West Campus. The university is committed to maintaining an ongoing dialogue with neighbouring residents to address any outstanding concerns.”

In addition to several noise mitigation strategies already in place, the university has commissioned a sound study that will recommend further strategies that could be implemented to reduce noise where possible. The study is expected to be completed this August.
