With the nomination period for the next chancellor of Queen’s now closed, the advisory committee responsible for recommending a candidate will review the nominees and make a recommendation to the principal.

As previously reported on the Queen’s News Centre, David Dodge announced in June that he would not seek a third term as chancellor, setting in motion the process to name his successor. In accordance with the university’s bylaws, an advisory committee to the principal was formed at the request of the University Council to undertake the search.

“Under the university’s Royal Charter, the University Council is charged with appointing the chancellor—the highest officer of the university,” says Lon Knox, University Secretary. “The chancellor presides over convocation, serves as chair of University Council and acts as a valuable ambassador for the university.”

Once the advisory committee has selected a candidate to recommend to the principal, and the chosen candidate has indicated their willingness to stand, the nomination will be brought forward to the executive committee of University Council and then to the Council as a whole to formalize the appointment at its annual general meeting in October.

The successful candidate will become Queen’s 14th chancellor and succeed David Dodge when his term expires on June 30, 2014.
