The Physical Education Centre (PEC) is now open and ready for use by the campus and Kingston communities.

The Bartlett, Bews and Ross gymnasiums are available after significant renovations, for activities including intramural programs, large events and exams. Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC) members and the Kingston community can also rent the gymnasiums.

“Supporting student health and wellness is a top priority for the university,” stated Ann Tierney, Vice-Provost and Dean of Student Affairs. “Reopening the gyms provides us with a tremendous increase in indoor physical activity space that allows us to expand recreation and intramural programming and introduce new programs. It also helps us with exam scheduling and gives us more options for hosting large events and community groups on campus.”

The PEC will fill an ongoing need for additional facility space created by increases in annual participation levels in Athletics and Recreation (A&R) programming. Waiting lists for students using the facilities are expected to disappear with the reopening of the PEC.

“We are delighted to see the reopening of the PEC for our programs,” says Jeff Downie, Associate Director, A&R. “Our athletic venues are used tremendously by both the campus and Kingston communities. The PEC will allow us to grow our student programs while also meeting the needs of many local sports organizations with additional space opportunities available for rent.”

A&R offers over 15,000 sport and physical activity participation opportunities each year. Close to one-third of Queen’s students participate in intramural leagues.
