Athletics and Recreation (A&R), led by the Gaels’ Varsity Leadership Council (VLC), is spearheading a holiday community outreach project to support Martha’s Table, a Kingston charity that provides low-cost nutritious meals to those in need.

The project builds on the work of the women’s rugby team last year. Team member Marin MacLeod, a fourth-year health studies student, led the initiative to sponsor Christmas dinner for two families.

“I saw the success of that campaign, and wondered what could be possible if we extended the challenge to all of A&R,” says Ms MacLeod, winner of the 2012 CIS Community Service Award for Women’s Rugby. “It is wonderful to see all of A&R come together to support Kingston families. It speaks to the special relationship between the Queen’s and local communities, as well as the culture of giving back and community outreach that is fostered at the university. ”

The VLC represents Queen’s student-athletes regarding all relevant issues and decisions within A&R. The VLC aims to promote a positive image of student-athletes and build relations with the Queen’s and Kingston communities through volunteer opportunities and outreach programs.

The Gaels are well on their way to gathering 10 family baskets, as well as a number of smaller individual baskets filled with additional food items and basic necessities for the individual patrons of Martha’s Table.

“We would like to thank Athletics and Recreation for their efforts in collecting items for the guests of Martha’s Table,” says Ronda Candy, Managing Director, Martha’s Table. “Their support will go a long way in brightening up the season for many.”

The response to the drive has been impressive, with 15 varsity teams and clubs on board to gather donations. A&R has launched a department-wide challenge to gather baskets from staff. The Gaels are asking for items to be dropped off December 6 between 10 am and 4 pm in the Alumni Lounge at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC).
