A world-renowned surgeon will receive an honorary degree at this year’s May convocation ceremonies, and an impressive list of guest speakers will also address the assemblies.

Dr. Bernard Langer

Dr. Bernard Langer

Dr. Langer became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1961 and joined the staff of the Toronto General Hospital in 1963. He was chair of the Division of General Surgery, University of Toronto, from 1982 to 1989 and was the Colonel R.S. McLaughlin Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery from 1982 to 1992. His clinical and research interests have focused mainly on diseases of the liver, biliary tract and pancreas. He developed an internationally respected Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery Unit and Liver Transplantation Program at the University of Toronto, and has authored or co-authored 174 papers and 29 book chapters, been visiting professor at university centres around the world on 67 occasions and has been on the editorial boards of numerous scientific journals.

Dr. Langer will receive his honorary degree (D. Sc.) on Thursday, May 22 at 2:30 pm at Grant Hall.

Glenn Ives

Mr. Ives joined Deloitte in 1999 as a partner and audit specialist in the financial services and mining sector. He led the transformation of a modest mining practice into one of Canada’s largest and was appointed the North American mining practice leader in 2005, overseeing a centre of excellence that serves most of the major mining corporations in Canada and the U.S. In 2012, he was appointed mining sector leader for North and South America. In 2007, he was made a vice chair of the firm, and was elected chair of Deloitte Canada in May 2010. In addition to his Canadian responsibilities, Mr. Ives is a member of the global board of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, chairs the risk committee and is a member of the governance committee. He currently serves on the Queen’s School of Business Advisory Board.

Mr. Ives will address the convocation assembly as a guest speaker on Thursday, May 22 at 10 am at Grant Hall.

Doug McIntosh

Doug McIntosh is a managing director and chief executive officer of Alvarez & Marsal Canada ULC, the Canadian operations of Alvarez & Marsal, a leading global restructuring, turnaround management, performance improvement and business advisory services firm with over 2,400 employees. He founded A&M's practice in Canada and serves as a member of the executive committee for the firm's commercial restructuring business in North America. He is a chartered professional accountant, chartered insolvency and restructuring professional, and a trustee in bankruptcy. Mr. McIntosh was one of the leading players in the comprehensive insolvency legislative reform process in Canada that took place from 2001 to 2009, serving as vice chair of the Joint Task Force Steering Committee on Insolvency Reform and on the Joint Legislative Review Task Force Committee.

Mr. McIntosh will address the convocation assembly as a guest speaker on Friday, May 23 at 10 am at Grant Hall.

Mary Ann Turcke

Ms. Turcke is the executive vice president – field operations for Bell Canada. She is a key member of Bell’s executive team, responsible for a $1 billion budget and 12,000 employees, a full quarter of Bell’s national workforce. She assumed her current role in 2008 with a clear mandate to improve service while reducing costs. She has led significant transformations, starting with modernization and efficiency improvements: equipping technicians with the right tools, streamlining service and delivery processes and changing the organization to rapidly respond to customer needs in an intensely competitive environment. Ms. Turcke began her career in the construction industry, designing and building roads and bridges for the Ontario Ministry of Transportation. She is also a member of the Queen’s School of Business Advisory Board and of the campaign cabinet for Queen’s Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science.
