Research led by Queen's University expert reveals hidden climate impact of everyday inhalers

What if one of Canada's most common medical devices had a hidden carbon footprint ?
Dr. Anthony Train, Assistant Professor in Queen's University's Department of Family Medicine, is available to discuss new research published in the scientific journal PLOS ONE. The research shows that despite growing awareness of the environmental impact of inhalers, prescribing habits for these devices in Ontario have changed very little, even though lower-emission alternatives are available for many patients.
These emissions are more significant than most people realize. A single metered dose inhaler can have a carbon footprint comparable to driving a gasoline car for 100 to 300 kilometres.
Analyzing more than 750,000 inhaler prescriptions dispensed between 2017 and 2023, Dr. Train found that metered-dose inhalers—which use hydrofluorocarbon propellants with a high climate impact—continued to account for 70–80 per cent of new prescriptions.
Many people can receive the same life-saving medicine through lower-emission devices, such as dry powder or soft mist inhalers, when clinically appropriate. Others will continue to need metered-dose inhalers, and no one should change medications without first speaking with their healthcare provider.
