A quick roundup of Queen’s Gaels student-athletes in action over the weekend:

CROSS COUNTRY

First-year runner Brogan MacDougall won the women’s individual gold medal on Saturday at the U SPORTS National Cross Country Championship hosted at Fort Henry.

With her first-place finish the Queen’s Gaels women’s team claimed the silver medal.

The men’s team also put in a strong performance, placing fifth.

BROGAN'S DOMINANCE
Despite cold and windy conditions, Brogan MacDougall tackled the 10-km course with ease as she won gold in a time of 27:48.6. She built up enough of a gap to finish nearly 14 seconds ahead of Laval’s Aurélie Dubé-Lavoie who placed second.

With her dominance, the rookie was named as the U SPORTS Cross Country Female Athlete of the Year, Rookie of the Year and a First Team All-Canadian.

WOMEN TAKE SILVER
Shortly behind MacDougall was her sister Branna MacDougall in ninth (28:45.8) and teammate Makenna Fitzgerald in 13th (29:07.5). The two were named Second Team All-Canadians. It was the second All-Canadian nod for MacDougall who was the OUA MVP and First Team All-Canadian last year. Rounding out the top five was Taylor Sills who placed 15th in 29:12.3and Laura Yantha, 24th in 29:57.7.

The Gaels finished seven points behind overall winner Laval

Other Gaels’ racers included Kara Blair (30:34.5) and Jade Watson (31:12.8).

MEN GO ALL OUT IN FRONT OF HOME CROWD
The Queen’s Gaels men finished fifth for the second consecutive year. Mitchell de Lange was the Gaels’ top finisher as his time of 31:42.0 was good for 12th place and a Second Team All-Canadian honour.

Teammate Ruben Sansom was crowned U SPORTS Rookie of the Year who placed 34th in 32:27.4.

Rounding out the Gaels’ top five was Matthew Flood who was 26th (32:09.4), Mitchell Kirby in 31st (32:22.4) and Brett Crowley in 46th (32:41.7). Other Gaels’ racers included Rob Kanko in 48th (32:49.2) and Nathan Dehghan in 66th (33:07.7).

The 12-km race was won by Guelph’s Connor Black in 31:13.0. Calgary took the team title.

MEN’S RUGBY

The Queen’s Gaels men’s rugby team successfully defended their OUA championship title by defeating the Guelph Gryphons 48-10 for their 24th Turner Trophy in program history. The win also caps a perfect 10-0 undefeated season in OUA play for the Tricolour.

Queen’s put forth a dominant effort from the opening minutes, controlling the play and pushing the Gryphons defence back on their heels. The first try of the match came as Dylan Young finished off a strong drive from the Gaels with a short try. He then followed up with a conversion for a 7-0 lead.

Minutes later the Gaels continued to put points up on the board. First, a great powerful driving run from Patrick Lynott set up another short score this time from Ruairidh MacPhail. Nicholas De Lallo then got in on the action with a try of his own and Queen's held a 21-0 lead.

Queen’s finished out the half with tries from Joshua Engelbrecht and Trevor Helgason to lead 31-0 at halftime.

Guelph used the break to their advantage as they were able to put down a pair of tries to cut into the Gaels lead at 31-10.

The Tricolour responded as De Lallo put down two tries of his own and John Varriano added another for good measure.

The Gaels secured the victory with a 48-10 final and Helgason was named the man of the match.

MEN’S HOCKEY

The Queen’s Gaels (8-3-0) earned a weekend sweep of their doubleheader with the UQTR Patriotes(6-5-0) following up Friday’s 5-2 win with a 3-2 victory on Saturday

On Friday, Mason Kohn scored a pair of goals while Luke Edwards, Slater Doggett and Duncan Campbell also found the back of the net. Justin Fazio was excellent in net making 53 saves for the win.

On Saturday, Patrick Sanvido and Slater Doggett put the Gaels ahead and Mason Kohn scored the winner with a little more than two minutes left. Jack Flinn made 51 stops to lead the Gaels to victory.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

The Queen’s Gaels (6-3-0-0) split their weekend home games, beating the Toronto Varsity Blues (4-3-0-1) 2-0 on Friday before falling 3-0 against the Ryerson Rams (4-2-2-0) on Saturday.

Hailey Wilson and Addi Halladay led the way for the Gaels against Toronto and Stephanie Pascal made 29 saves for the shutout.

On Saturday, the Gaels struggled to find their form and couldn’t solve Fanny Vingeant, who made 24 saves.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Queen’s men’s basketball team (3-2) won both games on the weekend, topping the Guelph Gryphons (1-5) 83-64 on Friday before defeating the Algoma Thunderbirds (1-5) 94-61 on Saturday at the ARC.

On Friday, the Gaels dominated the first and third quarters and held on for a comfortable win against the Gryphons. Jesse Graham led with 22 points and Quinton Gray had 21 points.

On Saturday, the Gaels got out to an early lead but the Thunderbirds stayed within striking distance until the third quarter. Jaz Bains finished with 25 points and Matt Elcock added 19 points.

WOMEN’S BAKETBALL

The Queen’s Gaels had a dominating home weekend beating the Guelph Gryphons (3-3) 80-49 on Friday and the Algoma Thunderbirds (0-6) 74-37 on Saturday at the ARC.

In both games, the Gaels got up early and didn’t let up. Leading the offense against the Gryphons was Marianne Alarie with 22 points, including five three-pointers.

On Saturday, Alarie finished with 17 points and Emma Weltz added 13 more.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Queen's Gaels (3-2) upset the top-ranked team in Canada, the No.1 McMaster Marauders (2-1) in a five-set thriller on Friday, 25-19, 25-21, 19-25, 25-27, 15-13.

They followed that up with another five-set win over the Brock Badgers 17-25, 19-25, 25-17, 25-20, 15-8.

On Friday the Gaels won the first two sets before the top-ranked Marauders evened it up. In the deciding set the Marauders would jump out to a quick 5-1 lead but the Gaels battled back to grab a lead of their own at 8-7. Eventually the Gaels would work their way to match point where Adam Boljkovac's kill sealed the win and the upset.

On Saturday, the Gaels were down two sets and battled back to claim the last three. Zac Hutcheson had 18 kills.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Queen’s Gaels stumbled on the weekend losing to the McMaster Marauders 15-25, 16-25, 27-25, 18-25 and the Brock Badgers 23-25, 25-18, 21-26, 27-29.

On Friday, Caroline Livingston, Julia Wiercigroch, and Saffron van der Linde finished with eight kills apiece.

On Saturday, Caroline Livingston had 15 kills and two aces against the Badgers.
