Gaels knock off top-ranked Marauders

A quick roundup of Queen's Gaels teams in action this weekend:

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Queen's Gaels women's basketball team staved off a fourth-quarter comeback bid from the U Sports No. 1 McMaster Marauders for a 70-68 victory on Saturday and remain unbeaten at 12-0 this season.

Abby Dixon scored a team-high 16 points and pulled down 16 rebounds for the No. 5 Gaels, who built a 13-point lead late in the third quarter before the Marauders made a final 10-minute push in Hamilton. The hosts went on a 12-1 run through the middle portion of the fourth-quarter to pull within a point of the Gaels with just over three minutes remaining. Emily Hazlett and Robyn Pearson helped the women maintain their lead through to the final minute of play, and McMaster missed a three-point attempt at the buzzer.

Hazlett finished the game with 14 points and five assists, while Pearson added 10 points and nine boards for the Gaels.

On Friday, Andrea Priamo knocked down a season-high 24 points as the Gaels notched a 79-72 victory over the Brock Badgers in St. Catharines.

Priamo also picked up 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season, while Pearson added 12 points and a game-high 15 boards.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Queen's Gaels men’s basketball team (6-6) dropped their second game in as many days on Saturday, falling to the McMaster Marauders (7-6) 87-75.

Jesse Graham had a game-high 25 points while picking up four rebounds and three steals. Sukhpreet Singh and Tanner Graham added 15 points each.

On Friday, the Gaels lost 77-63 to the Brock Badgers (8-4). Russell Winters led the way with 16 points while Jesse Graham added 10 points and six rebounds.

MEN’S HOCKEY

The No. 3 Queen's Gaels men’s hockey team (16-4-2) defeated the Brock Badgers (11-11-1) 5-0 on Saturday in St. Catharines.

Slater Doggett, Darcy Greenaway, Warren Steele, Ryan Bloom and Nevin Guy scored for the Gaels while Jacob Brennan stopped all 43 shots he faced.

On Friday, the Gaels were defeated by the York Lions (15-6-2) 5-4 in a shootout. Eric Ming netted a pair of goals and Harrison Hendrix and Bloom also found the back of the net for the Gaels.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

The Queen's Gaels women’s hockey team (8-3-6-0) defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks (4-3-6-5) 2-1 in overtime Friday to extend their winning streak to seven games.

Nadia Larocca netted the winner just 12 seconds into overtime after Kyla Crouse tied the game early in the third period.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Queen's Gaels (5-6) took their rematch with the RMC Paladins (0-11) in straight sets on Saturday 25-4, 25-9 and 25-18 at RMC. 

The Gaels were led by strong serving throughout the match with Sierra Hardy, Danielle Corrigan, Caroline Livingstone and Isabelle Birchall leading the way with six, five, four and three aces respectively. 

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Queen's Gaels men’s volleyball team (7-4) took down the RMC Paladins (2-9) on Saturday at RMC. The Gaels won in four sets 25-16, 25-15, 23-25 and 25-15. 

Zac Hutcheson and Markus Trence each had 12 kills for the Gaels while Jamie Wright finished with 38 assists.
