It’s a massive weekend for the Queen’s Gaels as two OUA championships will be decided here in Kingston.

In men’s hockey the Gaels face the Guelph Gryphons in the 108th edition of the Queen’s Cup at the Memorial Centre on Saturday.

In men’s volleyball it’s the Forsyth Cup Final Four with the Gaels battling it out with the McMaster Marauders, University of Toronto Varsity Blues, and the Windsor Lancers at the Athletics and Recreation Centre’s main gym.

The Gaels have reached the final after finishing in fourth in the OUA Eastern Conference while the Gryphons ended the regular season fifth in the Western Conference. However, both teams have gone on golden runs in the playoffs, eliminating the top seeds to make it to the Queen’s Cup final.

In the conference finals the Gaels downed the Carleton Ravens in two games straight while the Gryphons came back to beat the Western Mustangs 2-1 after losing the series opener.

The two teams met just once in the OUA regular season with the Gryphons taking a 7-1 win in Kingston.

Both teams have qualified for the U Sports David Johnston University Cup which runs March 14-17 in Lethbridge Alta.

Puck drop is set for 7:30 pm, tickets are available while quantities last at gogaelsgo.com/tickets and the game can be seen live on OUA.tv.

VOLLEYBALL

The Forsyth Cup Final Four is set as the Gaels will welcome the Toronto Varsity Blues, McMaster Marauders and Windsor Lancers for the OUA championship weekend at the Queen’s ARC.

The Gaels, who finished atop the Eastern Conference standings, face the Varsity Blues in the semifinals at 3 pm with the winner advancing to Sunday’s championship final and the loser playing for the bronze medal. The Western Conference final, at 1 pm, features McMaster and Windsor.

The Gaels were strong throughout the OUA season, finishing with a 15-3 record. Queen’s was one of only two teams in the OUA to defeat the McMaster Marauders and the only team to do so in Hamilton.

The Forsyth Cup finalists will be guaranteed spots at the 2019 U Sports men’s volleyball championship hosted by Laval in Quebec City, March 15-17.

Tickets are available at gogaelsgo.com/tickets or you can catch all the action live on OUA.tv.
