Queen’s Gaels runner Claire Sumner (Artsci'17) and women’s soccer player Laura Callender (Kin'16, MSc '18) will be representing Canada at the 2017 Summer Universiade, Aug. 19-30 in Taipei City.

The two are part of the 392-member Canadian delegation, which includes 276 athletes, 113 mission and support staff, and three referees in 16 sports.

“I am beyond excited to be representing Canada and Queen’s again. Racing at the international level is every runner’s dream, so I feel very lucky to be a part of this FISU team,” says Sumner, the 2017 U Sports gold medalist who will be competing in the 10,000-metre event. “I can't wait to meet all the athletes and travel to a country I never thought I would have the opportunity to visit. I am very grateful for the ongoing support from the Queen’s Athletics Department, and specifically my coach Steve Boyd for getting me to where I am today.”

Sumner will compete in the 10,000 metres on Wednesday, Aug 23 at 7:45 am ET (7:45 pm local time).

Callender was a captain with the Gaels last season and has helped them earn a gold and silver OUA medal and two national championship appearances over the past two seasons.

“I am so honoured to have been selected to represent Team Canada in Taipei City this summer,” Callender says. “I couldn't be more excited to have the chance to experience international soccer and play alongside such talented players from all over the country. I am so thankful for my coaches, teammates, and support staff at Queen’s for helping me achieve this.”

Callender and her teammates will play Ireland on Sunday, Aug. 20 at 4 am ET (4 pm local time) and then Mexico on Tuesday, Aug. 22 at 4 am ET (4 pm local time).

The opening ceremony of the 2017 Summer Universiade will be held on Aug. 19 at Taipei Municipal Stadium, beginning at 7 am ET (7 pm local time).
