Matthew Leybourne is a Professor of Geochemistry and Analytical Geochemistry in the Department of Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario. His research is focused on developing new analytical methods especially related to solution and laser ablation ICP-MS and low-level trace element determinations, the geochemistry of fluids associated with ore deposits (groundwater, marine water and hydrothermal systems), geochemical exploration, the petrogenesis of igneous rocks, and the timing of the onset of Plate Tectonics. Research at Queen’s is focused on developing new low-level determinations of trace metals and development of novel isotopic measurements of Te, Se, Ni, Cr, Ba and Sb. Matt is Co-Director of the Queen’s Facility for Isotope Research (QFIR) and is a faulty member of the Arthur B. McDonald Canadian Astroparticle Physics Research Institute in the Department of Physics, Astronomy and Engineering Physics. QFIR houses: four isotope ratio mass spectrometers for light stable isotopes (H, O, C, S, N); a triple quadrupole ICP-MS, ICP-OES, high resolution ICP-MS and multi-collector ICP-MS for elemental and isotopic (Li, B, Cu, Fe, Zn, Sr, Pb, U, Nd, Tl, Mo, U) determinations; two 193 nm excimer laser ablation systems; field-emission gun ESEM with MLA; electron microprobe analyzer; XRD with micro-scanning ability; electric pulse disaggregator; and thin -section preparation facility. Previously, Matt was an Associate Professor of Geochemistry at Laurentian University, Senior Geochemist at ALS Geochemistry, Senior Scientist at GNS Science in New Zealand and Professor at the University of Texas at Dallas. His previous research has involved geochemical and isotopic investigations of ancient and modern rocks, active hydrothermal ore-forming systems on the seafloor, groundwater geochemistry, and ancient ore-deposits.
