The Department of Sociology celebrated 50 years on September 21, 2019 at the Donald Gordon Conference Centre! Thank you to all alumni, former faculty, staff and friends as well as current faculty, staff and students who attended.
Our recent PhD graduate, Derya Gungor had a grad chat interview which aired on Grad Chat, CFRC on September 24. Derya discussed how she produced her PhD thesis, and its implications in Turkey and for women in Canada and the US.
Dr. Norma Möllers will be presenting her research at the 4S 2019 New Orleans on September 5 and will be at The Word on the Street Toronto Festival on September 21, for a panel discussion on technology and justice convened by Toronto Public Library as part of their series #oncivilsociety.
On October 2 David Lyon gave a public lecture, “Waking up to Smart Surveillance” at the Jagiellonian University, Kraków, Poland, as one of the events associated with the 656th annual inauguration of the new academic year. The university was founded in 1364. Nicholas Copernicus was once a student there.
Dr. Victoria Sytsma is the co-principal investigator on a research team which has secured a grant in the amount of $110,346.69USD from The Charles Koch Foundation, Criminal Justice & Policing Reform Program to complete a study titled, Identifying Situational Determinants of Police Use of Force: A Systematic Social Observation of Body Camera Footage in Newark, NJ

Dr. Lyon says the idea of ‘God’s eye’ is frequently used as a metaphor for surveillance. It speaks of a gaze that is all-seeing and, because it is God’s eye, all-powerful.
Dr. Sytsma collaborating with cannabis experts from the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction on two studies: Monitoring Canada’s Cannabis Use and Procurement Trends and Monitoring Canada’s Cannabis Trends: Changes in Workplace Use and Impaired Driving over Time. The research relies on data from the National Cannabis Survey.
This year marks the official launch of Queen’s University’s first-ever Undergraduate Journal of Sociology. In honour of this very special milestone, the Sociology department is thrilled to introduce the inaugural issue of Phenomena. Published on a biannual basis, the journal is designed to celebrate you – the incredible minds of Queen’s University.
Dr. Levine-Rasky co-edited a book with McGill-Queen’s University Press entitled, We Resist: Defending the Common Good in Hostile Times. It appears in the 2020 summer catalogue.
