Cheryl listens to problems and advises the best solution within her scope. The positivity and encouragement in her words have always been de-stressing. As an international student, I faced a couple of hardships that impaired my wellness and affected my progress. She always supported me through these issues by assuring me and taking immediate action. She'll explain every issue you have been facing and she will listen as a good friend without judging you.
I am truly honored to be nominated for such an important initiative. Mental health and wellness is a subject that is very close to my heart. It is important to not feel ashamed when discussing our mental health. I am proud to be a part of a community where students can come forward about their personal or academic challenges and be open about it without fear of judgement. I am also fortunate to work in a very inclusive and supportive work environment that allows me to feel valued and understood when faced with my own challenges.
My goal is to ensure all students prioritize their well-being and feel comfort in knowing that they do not stand alone in their struggles with mental health. I try to always show empathy, understand the student’s point of view so that I can approach it with kindness and compassion. If I am unable to connect the student with useful resources at that moment, I will seek them out, as I will not rest until the student has access to all the information and services available to them. Although hardships involving mental health are not visible like a physical affliction, it is always there and something that needs to be well nourished. You never know what battles others are facing internally, so it is important to show kindness and patience to those around you.
I would like to emphasize that it is NOT selfish to take care of yourself in your wellness journey. Treat it as an investment that you are making in yourself to guarantee a balanced mind, body and soul for the future YOU!
